You copied every slide and every board in class. You even color-coded. Then, the week before the exam, you open the notebook and none of it comes back. All those hours of writing produced a document, not a memory. The problem with most note-taking is not neatness; it is a wrong answer to "what are notes for?"
The short version: notes are not a record; they are scaffolding for later retrieval. In class, minimize transcription and capture four things: questions, the "why," what the professor emphasized, and what confused you. Then spend ten minutes the same day converting the notes into question-and-answer cards. That last step is the actual note-taking method.
Why beautiful notes are useless by exam week
Copying is hand work, not thinking. While you transcribe, your head is fully occupied shuttling between listening and writing, and the margin for processing meaning disappears. That is why the most complete transcripts contain the least trace of your own understanding.
And rereading notes later is exactly that: rereading, the technique Dunlosky's 2013 review classified as low-utility. It grows recognition (looks familiar) but not recall (can produce it on a blank page). Four things to write, two things to skip

All four can only be captured live. The slide text will still be there tonight; the sentence the professor repeated twice, and the exact moment you lost the thread, will not.
Skip verbatim copying of slides (you will get the deck anyway) and decorative formatting. Decoration feels productive, but it only marks text without making you produce anything, which is why highlighting also scored low in Dunlosky's review.

A practical format: leave a narrow column on the right edge of the page and, next to each chunk of notes, write a question that the chunk answers (this is the core of the Cornell-style layout). To review, cover the body and answer the question column. The notebook becomes a problem set.

The finishing move: ten minutes after class, notes become cards
Even the best notes fade on the shelf; the forgetting curve does not respect stationery. So spend ten minutes on the same day and convert the notes into question-and-answer flashcards. If you kept a question column, this is nearly mechanical.
