How to use it
- 1
Enter your current grade and the percent of the course already completed.
- 2
Enter the final course grade you want to reach.
- 3
Review the required remaining average and compare realistic target scenarios.
Separate points already earned from the weight still available
If a current grade covers 70% of a course, the points already secured are current grade multiplied by 0.70. The target total minus those points must come from the remaining 30%. Dividing that gap by 0.30 gives the average required on the final exam or remaining assignments. A result above 100% means the target cannot be reached without extra credit or a different grading rule; a result below zero means it is already secured mathematically.
The formula assumes the current grade is a weighted grade for completed work and that the remaining weight is graded on the same percentage scale. Dropped assignments, category minimums, curves, extra credit, rounding, and attendance rules can change the result. Check the syllabus and gradebook definition before making a high-stakes decision. Use several targets to build a safe range, then identify which remaining topics create the largest score improvement rather than studying every chapter equally.
This tool works without an account and processes the inputs in your browser. Treat the result as a decision aid, then compare it with the rules in your syllabus or the latest information from the testing provider. A number is most useful when it changes what you do next: isolate the weak material, turn it into a clear retrieval prompt, and schedule another attempt after some forgetting has occurred. That closes the loop between calculation and durable learning.
Frequently asked questions
What if the required score is above 100%?
The target is mathematically unavailable under the entered weights unless extra credit, a curve, or another grading rule changes the calculation.
Should completed weight include the final exam?
No. Enter only work already included in the current grade. The remaining percentage should include the final and all ungraded work.
Does this tool upload my study data?
The calculation or conversion runs in this browser. Avoid entering confidential information, and keep an exported backup of material you cannot replace.
Can I treat the result as an official grade or score?
Use it as a planning estimate. Your school, testing provider, syllabus, and official score report take priority over this browser calculation.
