You sat down. You opened the book. Then you checked your phone, made a drink, and thirty minutes evaporated. What accumulates is not study time but the daily verdict: "I couldn't even start today." That lost half hour costs you twice: once in time, and once in the false self-image it reinforces every evening: weak-willed.

Laziness is the wrong diagnosis, and so is weak will. What is missing is a starting design.

The short version: you cannot start because the first action is vague and demands decisions. Three fixes: shrink the first action to "answer one flashcard," let a system decide what to study, and fix a trigger (time and place) for starting. Willpower appears nowhere in the plan.

Why "study chapter 3" never starts

The task "study chapter 3" silently demands a stack of decisions at the moment of starting: from where? take notes? until when? Vague tasks erect a wall of decision costs right before action, and the brain defers costly actions, so your hand reaches for the zero-decision alternative: the phone. That is the whole anatomy of it. The failure sits in how the task was written, not in the person who wrote it.

Fix 1: shrink the first action until it is laughably small

Cut the opening move down to something executable with zero decisions: not "study chapter 3" but "open the app and answer the one card it shows." One card takes ten seconds. It feels absurd, and that is fine. The exercise is not aimed at volume; it is aimed at the hardest checkpoint of the session, which is getting started at all.

Once started, the psychology flips. Work left half-finished keeps tugging at your attention, so one answered card naturally pulls in "just two more." Before starting, inertia works against you; after starting, it works for you. Exploit the asymmetry.

Fix 2: outsource the "what should I study" decision

The other killer is deciding what to work on after you sit down; every open decision is a door procrastination walks through. This is where a spaced repetition algorithm quietly solves the problem: open the app and today's due cards are already queued. No subject choice, no scope judgment, no prioritizing. A zero-decision start, every time.

Fix 3: fix the starting trigger

"I'll study when I find time" finds no time, ever. Remove starting from the realm of decisions by welding a trigger to an action:
